An accelerant was used to burn a body found by a dog walker in rural South Auckland yesterday.

The man's body was found about 5m off the side of the northern end of McRobbie Rd in Kingseat after a scrub fire was reported at 6.30am.

Police are keeping an open mind as to whether the death was self inflicted or the result of a homicide.

An autopsy completed yesterday revealed the body was that of a man aged between 15 and 30, weighing between 75kg and 90kg and between 178cm and 193cm tall.

His dental records showed he had no fillings. The man's ethnicity could not be established.

Detective Inspector Dave Lynch said the focus of the investigation was identifying the victim.

"Police are keeping an open mind around the manner of death, however identifying the victim is likely to give the investigation direction around whether the death was self inflicted or the result of a homicide."

Yesterday word among neighbours was that the dead man was a former resident in the area but police could not confirm that.

Mary Clarke, who lives on the street the body was found, said she smelled smoke early in the morning but thought nothing of it.

She was shocked something like that could happen in the quiet, rural street.

Police urged people to come forward if they had any information about the incident.
