A Porirua man has been charged with attempted murder and sexual violation after an alleged ‘‘prolonged and serious assault’’ on a 54-year-old woman on a popular city walking track.

Detective Matt Fitzgerald, of Porirua CIB, said the woman suffered ‘‘serious’’ injuries from the attack that lasted about five minutes. ‘‘It was a significant period of time.’’

The woman was walking along the Kenepuru walkway, between the Porirua Railway Station and Kenepuru Drive, about 9am when the male allegedly approached her from behind.

‘‘It appears the assault was random and unprovoked.’’

A 23-year-old local man was arrested at the scene and will appear in the Porirua District Court on the two charges tomorrow morning.

The woman spent a couple of hours being treated in Wellington Hospital before being discharged and sent home to recover.

Fitzgerald said Police were not speculating on motive at this stage.

‘‘We’re yet to formally interview [the victim]. We will probably wait for specialist interviewers to become available before we sit down with her and go through it all in more detail.’’

The area where the attack happened was very much out in the open, he said.

‘‘All it is a track that runs alongside a stream opposite State Highway 1. There’s not a lot of trees around,’’ he said.

‘‘It’s open view to houses across the road and to anybody using the car park on the other side of the stream.’’

Fitzgerald said Police were keen to speak with a cyclist, thought to have been wearing a green fluro top, who was in the area at the time.

Anyone with information is asked to call Porirua Police on (04) 238 1400.
