A 20-year old Christchurch man has been stabbed in the head with a nine-centimetre knife after a party in the suburb of St Albans, police say.

He was stabbed just behind the eye and the knife remained embedded in his head after a party at the Flockton St house where he lived.

Another 20-year old man was arrested at the scene and was to appear in Christchurch District Court today on charges of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Police said they were called around 1am and believed there had been an altercation on the street near the house.

A police officer who was among the first on the scene had emergency medical experience and decided to leave the knife undisturbed.

The victim was transferred to hospital with what were described as non-life threatening injuries, police said.

He was expected to undergo surgery today.
