Neighbours heard the Mitsubishi Mirage speeding up the road before they saw it.
It went through a lamppost, a stop sign, a fence and into the side of a house at 27 Gosford Dr, Pakuranga. The smash cut power.
House occupant Beverley Anderson thought it was an earthquake.
"I was in bed, I went outside and the car was under the house. My room's on the other end of the house, I'm so glad he didn't go any further and hit my car."
Anderson's flatmate, Mike Slade, was just getting into bed as the car hit. "I could hear the car coming pretty quick, next minute it hit the house. It felt like an earthquake, I didn't know what was going on. It gave it a good jolt."
He went outside to find a group of people under the deck trying to help the driver.
His friend, 24, was dead in his house from stab wounds 3.5km away.
Police, who have opened a homicide inquiry at a Half Moon Bay house in East Auckland, say the dead man was found at 11.30pm on Friday.
Fiesta Dr resident Gerald Woollard said a quiet night was broken by a bang. He said he did not know the dead man, still to be named by police.
He had noticed people using marijuana in the street. "It was clandestine, there was no fuss."
Other neighbours said they did not know the man.
Soon after the death, the other man with the knife wounds jumped in his car and drove to Pakuranga.
Jordan Andrew heard a loud bang from his house across the road and joined neighbours outside.
"It was dark but I could see he had blood all over his clothes," Andrew said.
"It wasn't like a normal accident scene, the cops arrived and ran in, pushing everyone out of the way saying, ‘Where's the knife?' "
The man was taken to Middlemore Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Detective Inspector Jim Gallagher had no doubt the knife death and the car crash were related.
"It is a link because we believe the driver of the car and the deceased are known to each other," Gallagher said.
"There is nothing to suggest anyone else at this early stage is involved," he said.
Police appealed for sightings of the man's distinctive two door 1996 Mitsubishi Mirage Sport and wanted to hear from anybody who saw it between 9.30pm and 11pm between Half Moon Bay, Pakuranga and Botany Downs.
