A woman believed to have been held hostage in the Glenview house, from which a shot was fired, had safely left the property.
Waikato police communications manager Andrew McAlley confirmed a man, woman and child were on the Tomin Rd property this morning when police responded to an incident involving a gun shortly after 9am.
''At 10.15am the child and female have made their way out of the house and the male, believed to be the offender is still in the house,'' McAlley earlier said, however witnesses at the scene said police were talking to the man.
During the standoff, McAlley said cordons had been put in place on Tomin and Ohaupo roads. Bruce and Richan streets were also blocked off.
A Glenview Tce resident said his sister lived across the road from the Tomin Rd house where the incident happened.
He said she had left home to walk to the nearby Wananga O Aotearoa campus when the incident began unfolding.
"She left her house to walk to her course and heard some shots go off," said the man, who declined to be named.
His sister immediately headed to her brother's house around the corner.
"She was shocked. Her heart was pumping when she came here."
The man said a witness, who was now being interviewed by police, had told him that a woman in the house had been beaten by a man at the address, who had smashed up doors and windows.
