Infamous New Zealand gang the Mongrel Mob has started recruiting Kiwi expats in Melbourne, Australia.

The "evil" gang had established a foothold in the Werribee area, in Melbourne's outer west, and was recruiting Maori and Pacific Islanders, reported the Herald Sun.

Victoria police told the newspaper it was aware of the gang's activities and was monitoring them closely.

They said a chapter had not yet been properly established.

Melbourne police officer Detective Superintendent Boyle last year told The Age he had become familiar with the Mongrel Mob in the area, as well as other gangs from Los Angeles and London.
