A 67-year-old Dutch tourist has turned the tables on an attacker, wrestling a softball bat the man was using and striking him with it.

Police today were looking for two men who assaulted the Dutch man and his wife in their campervan while they slept.

One of the men would be sporting a fairly decent bruise or cut to his head, they said.

The assault was believed to be an attempted robbery, which took place in the Matauri Bay carpark about 11.30pm on Wednesday.

Kerikeri police were seeking any information from the public about the identity of the two men.

While most tourists had an "enjoyable and safe time" in Northland, police were encouraging tourists with campervans to stay inside camping grounds to avoid becoming the targets of thieves.

Anyone with information should call Constable Gary Lowe at Kerikeri police on 09 407 9211 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
