Police are not seeking anyone in connection to a fatal shooting of a 22-year-old man in Ngaruawahia overnight.

The man's body was removed from a Waingaro Rd house this morning and his death referred to the coroner.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Patterson, of Waikato CIB, said the man had been out drinking with friends in Ngaruawahia on Saturday night.

When he returned home a firearm was fired, causing fatal injuries.

Mr Patterson told the Waikato Times the shooting was a tragic event and a reminder that alcohol and firearms ''are not a good mix''.

Police were alerted to the shooting just before midnight.

Three witnesses were interviewed by officers this morning with scene examinations expected to be completed by midday.

Family members declined to speak with media.

Mr Patterson said no-one else was being sought in connection with the shooting and no charges would be laid.

The Times understands the deceased was a local man who lived at the house with family members.

No children were present at the time of the shooting.

Mr Patterson said he wasn't aware of police being called to the address before.
