Police have been attacked by up to 100 youths after attempting to break up a street brawl in Manurewa, South Auckland overnight.

Around 25 separate calls to police were received around 2.30am reporting up to 100 people fighting in the streets.

When police arrived they came under attack by youths armed with bottles and other weapons.

About 40 officers, two police dogs and the police helicopter eagle were deployed and it took about 30 minutes restore order.

A large number of arrests were made, and the remainder of the youths eventually dispersed into the surrounding neighbourhood.
