An aggravated robbery of a Tauranga dairy has been quickly solved after a member of the public caught the robber, police say.

A man with a pistol held up a dairy on Cameron Road at about 5pm. He fled with cash and cigarettes, but was quickly stopped by a member of the public, a Northcoms Auckland spokesman said.

Investigations were continuing tonight with Tauranga police appealing for witnesses to the event to contact them.
