Tradies' tools nabbed in midnight subdivision burglary in Hamilton
Welders and building tools have been stolen from a new subdivision being built on the outskirts of Hamilton.
Just before midnight on Tuesday the culprits skulked into the new development on Gateway Drv in the northwestern suburb of Horotiu.
They forced their way into the site's portacom and raided it of goods.
"Tools were taken," Waikato police Senior Sergeant Robbie Hermann said.
"Welders, painting tools, construction and building tools."
A security guard at the site spotted the thieves' vehicle and relayed the information to police, Hermann said.
Half an hour later officers managed to track the vehicle down in Huntly.
Inside they found the haul of tools, Hermann said.
"There was still a lot of gear in there but until the owners of the property figure out what exactly has been taken we won't know the full extent, but we think we have got a lot of it back."
"We also found a person in it."
A 28-year-old man from Huntly was arrested and charged with burglary. He would likely appear in Hamilton District Court on Wednesday.
And police believe he wasn't acting alone.
"I think some other people are involved and inquiries are underway to identify those people."
Tools were regularly targetted by thieves and police urged all tradespeople to photograph their tools and take a record of their serial numbers, ensure vehicles and buildings are locked and security is in place on site.
