Horrific slaying site to be sold, torn down
A Christchurch flat where teenager Hayden Miles was brutally murdered looks set to be sold and demolished.
Residents at 612 Cashel St have been given notice to vacate the premises by mid next month, ahead of settlement date.
They have been told the deteriorating house, divided into four flats, will be demolished and replaced with town houses.
Flat 3, where 28-year-old Gavin Gosnell carried out his fatal assault on Hayden in August 2011, is vacant.
Gosnell, who dismembered the boy's body and buried his remains, will be sentenced on June 5 after being found guilty of murder after a High Court trial in Christchurch.
The entire Cashel St property was on the market for $429,000, and is one of several homicide houses in the city listed for sale in the last 18 months.
The property is being sold by GB Properties Limited, based in New Plymouth.
Co-director Kirsty Godfrey-Billy said the sale had not yet reached settlement date so she refused to name the purchaser, but hoped it would go "smoothly".
Hayden's mother, Jacqui Miles, welcomed the flat being destroyed.
"It's such an evil thing that happened there. It's sad for Hayden and for the family," she said.
Miles said the flat was a "living memory" of Gosnell's horrific attack on her son and any parent who had lost a child in that way would want the house gone.
"I don't drive past it. It's too painful," she said.
Two of the flats are occupied, including by mother Louisa Anderson and her daughter, Kasha, 3. Anderson, a beneficiary, said her search for a new home was getting desperate as the deadline to vacate loomed.
