House where boy killed to be renovated
Residents being evicted from a divided Christchurch house where teenager Hayden Miles was brutally murdered will not be left "on the street", the real estate agent says.
Residents at 612 Cashel St, Linwood, have been given notice to vacate ahead of settlement date on June 11.
Harcourts real estate agent Adrienne Shaw said the building, split into four flats and a sleep-out, would be renovated and re-tenanted - not demolished as earlier reported.
Shaw said there was a lot of "rumour" around what was happening with the property's sale, which she has taken over after the original agent went overseas.
"There were people who wanted to bowl it but found it too expensive to do that, that's why it's being renovated," she said.
She said the renovations would be "to a good standard" in line with the theme of the area, which was now quite tidy.
"It's too good to be demolished."
The purchaser was a local investor with a "social conscience" and current residents were given six weeks' notice to vacate.
However, a property manager was trying to find alternative accommodation for the current tenants, including solo mother Louisa Anderson and her daughter, Kasha, 3.
Anderson, a beneficiary, said earlier her search for a new home was getting desperate as the deadline to vacate loomed.
Shaw said the property manager had other house-converted properties on his books that may be suitable for Anderson, and for one other remaining tenant.
That process was likely to take a few more weeks.
Two flats were vacant and a third tenant had already opted to go his own way.
"Everyone's mindful of the situation. No one is going to be on the street," she said.
Gavin Gosnell, 28, brutally killed 15-year-old Hayden Miles in Flat 3 of the property in August 2011.
Gosnell, who dismembered the boy's body and buried his remains, was found guilty of murder after a High Court trial in Christchurch.
