A Nelson man has been hospitalised with serious head injuries following a bar fight in a small West Coast town.

The incident happened when a fight erupted between two groups at a Reefton pub on Wednesday night.

The West Coast police Facebook page reported the fight was the latest violent incident in Reefton in the past month.

A Nelson man was admitted to Greymouth Hospital with head injuries following the fight, and a Reefton man had been charged with assault.

A 24-year-old Nelson man was also arrested yesterday and charged with disorderly behaviour.

Police said further offenders were likely to be charged as the investigation continued.

"Police, hotel owners and the community have had enough of this violent behaviour and the instigators if identified can expect a trip to court to explain to the judge their behaviour," police said.
