A young woman was abducted by a carload of men and sexually assaulted in the Taranaki town of Waitara this morning.

The 18-year-old was taken between 3am and 3.30am by a group of up to five men and driven towards Waitara beach and sexually assaulted.

Police want to speak to two good samaritans who helped the woman and took her into their home.

Detective Sergeant Gerard Bouterey said the woman was taken from outside an address in Cracroft St.

"She was ... taken towards Waitara beach and was sexually assaulted before she managed to leave the vehicle," he said.

"After leaving the vehicle the woman has run to an address where she received help from the residents.

"The residents have driven her back to her home address and contacted police."

The vehicle was a large, dark-coloured, four-door station wagon.

Police are appealing to the public and asking them to come forward with any information or sighting of the vehicle.

"While this appears to be a random incident, we encourage the community to remain vigilant and keep their eyes peeled for any suspicious activity," he said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Bouterey on 06 759 9472, or the New Plymouth police on 06 759 5500.

Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
