Thieves have smashed their way into a Thames bottle store for a few bottles of booze.

Police are investigating the smash and grab at Golddiggers Liquor Warehouse on Pollen St in Thames late Sunday night.

At least one person wearing a dark hoodie smashed the shopfront window next to the door around 10.40pm, Senior Sergeant Ray Malcolmson of Waikato police said.

They stole a "couple of bottles" of booze before fleeing on foot.

The alarm was activated but by the time police, and the store manager, arrived at the store the perpetrators were gone.

Malcolmson said police staff in Thames were following up on inquiries.
