Armed Offenders Squad members have been stood down after a man was found dead in an Upper Hutt house.

Twenty-five police officers - 10 local officers and 15 Armed Offenders Squad members - were called to Whitemans Valley Rd in Upper Hutt about 9am today.

Acting Area Commander Shane Cotter said a person had been found dead at an address nearby.

Police did not fire any shots.

Police were not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident at this stage, Cotter said.

Earlier, local resident Jax Kirk said she had been told by police they were attending an ''armed incident'' on Whitemans Valley Rd, at the Blue Mountains Rd end.

Police had blocked off the road and were searching people's car boots, she said.

Police were stood down about 11am.
