A person has been taken to hospital in a critical condition after a serious assault in Newtown.

Ambulance communications said they were called to the scene of an assault at the junction of Rintoul and Colombo Streets at 9.45pm.

Rintoul St residents say the road has been cordoned off and police officers are going door to door speaking to potential witnesses.
