A man is in hospital with life-threatening stab wounds after an incident in Auckland - the second stabbing overnight.

Police said they were called to Rosehill in Papakura at 2.30am to respond to a serious assault.

A spokesman said the male victim was taken to hospital.

Counties Manukau police CIB are at the scene and are investigating the incident as a grievous assault. They are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the attack to contact them on (09) 261-1300.

Earlier a man in his forties was taken to Middlemore Hospital with a wound in his back after an incident in Clark's beach around 6pm.

Ambulance staff said he was in a serious - but not critical - condition.
