Three men who allegedly took a digger for a joy ride in the wee hours of this morning will face charges.

Police were called by a resident who heard the digger start up at 2.45 and drive along the reserve behind some houses in Wainuiomata, reported Radio New Zealand.

One of the men ran off when police arrived but was caught by a police dog, said Constable Allies Edge.

It was unclear how they managed to get the digger started.
