A man celebrating his 18th birthday has shot one of his friends in the knee with a slug gun.

The incident happened in a residential area of Alexandra around 3.20am, Acting Inspector John Robinson of police southern communications said.

The man, who was drunk, had afterwards wandered around for a time then found his way back home. He had been arrested and taken into custody.

"This is a classic case of why firearms and alcohol don't mix," Robinson said.
