Monk bashed unconscious in temple
Police are hunting for three men involved in a "nasty attack on a harmless monk" at a Buddhist Temple south of Auckland last night.
The 58-year-old Vietnamese monk was hospitalised with a number of fractures and a serious head wound.
He was assaulted and handcuffed after three men smashed down the front of his ranch slider.
They stole from the temple after the assault.
The men left the monk unconscious after the attack and attempted to steal his car to get away.
They were unable to use the car and abandonded it on the premises.
The monk managed to call police when he regained consciousness.
A scene examination is being completed.
The monk suffered a number of fractures and a significant head wound. He is in hospital.
A number of suspicious cars were seen in the area before the attack.
Police are also interested in sightings of a blue 2000 Mazda Capella hatchback, with the registration ESJ 401.
Anyone with information is urged to call Counties Manukau CIB on 09 261 1300 or to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
