The burglary of a gun from a suburban home prompted four Christchurch schools to go into lockdown.

A man has been arrested after police advised the Bishopdale community to go into lockdown while they searched for a possible armed offender following a burglary about 2.10pm on Wednesday.

Four schools – Cotswold School, Isleworth School, Kidsfirst Isleworth and Breens Intermediate – closed their doors until the restriction was lifted shortly before 3.30pm.

Police on Chedworth Ave, Christchurch, following a burglary on Wednesday afternoon.

The lockdown followed an armed burglary on nearby Chedworth Ave.

A friend of the homeowners said burglars smashed the back window and entered the home.

They ransacked the property and stole one firearm before they were interrupted when the homeowner returned.

The homeowner said no other firearms were at the property.

Police said three to four people dispersed after officers arrived.

One offender was found later with a stolen firearm, and three other possible offenders were being sought by police.

Police were confident there was no threat to the four nearby schools but they were advised to go into lockdown for a short time "as a precaution", a police spokesman said.
