Thousands stolen from ATM in red zone
Thieves have stolen thousands of dollars from an ATM in Christchurch that has remained switched off inside a red-zoned building since the earthquakes.
Police were called to the scene of the crime - believed to be the old PSIS building on Armagh St - by workmen who discovered the burglary this morning.
Detective Sergeant Richard Quested said a ''large sum'' of money had been stolen from the machine. He would not discuss figures other than to say it totalled thousands of dollars in cash.
The ATM was inside a secure building not visible from the road. It appeared the thieves had gained access through an adjacent building.
''We don't know exactly when this has occurred and I'm not totally sure of the circumstances yet,'' he said.
''It appears the ATM has been out of action since the 2011 earthquake and has been sitting there without power on.''
Quested said he was yet to speak to the owners of the machine.
Police were at the scene investigating.
