A drunk 17-year-old left at least 11 victims traumatised after allegedly robbing them at knifepoint during a ''mayhem'' crime spree in central Wellington.
The teenager left almost a dozen victims in his wake between Cuba St, Manners Street and Frank Kitts Park last night, allegedly menacing them with a knife for their money and mobile phones.
He was due for appearance in Wellington District Court this morning, facing nine charges of aggravated robbery, assault with a weapon, demanding with menace, and possessing a knife.
Detective Sergeant Mark Scott said the teenager must have worked quickly, before police caught up with him near the Wellington waterfront.
''At this stage it's to do with 11 victims - all unknown to him and going about their normal business in town last night. Everyone we've spoken to has come away injury-free ... but there's a lot of traumatised people.
''It was all mixes of people, old and young. Just people in the wrong place at the wrong time.''
Police responded as soon as the first calls came in, Scott said, so for the teen to approach 11 people meant he was moving fast.
''It certainly happened over a fairly short period of time. Eleven is quite a lot.''
The 17-year-old was held over night at the police station and was taken to court this morning.
''It's just another example of intoxicated youths, without supervision, out on the town causing mayhem,'' Scott said.
Police believe there may have been more victims and have encouraged them to come forward, as they continue to investigate the night's events.
"An investigation is ongoing and we will be reviewing CCTV footage from the central city today. Police would like to hear from anyone else who may have seen this male or were approached by him.''
