Police in Northland are interested in finding a white sedan with a black stripe down the side after a witness saw a teenager bound and gagged in the front seat.
Witnesses told police about 12.45pm yesterday they had seen the car driving along Kerehunga Rd, Poriti near Whangarei. The car drove past the witnesses and turned onto Mangakahia Rd.
The witness said a teenage girl was in the front passenger seat with what appeared to be duct tape across her mouth. The girl's hands appeared to be tied together and she looked scared.
The car was described as a white sedan with a black stripe down the side and the teenager was described as part Maori with brown or black hair tied up in a bun.
Northland police communications manager Sarah Kennett said the police have not had any missing persons reported.
"We did several inquiries following the witness reports and didn't come up with anything, or receive any further reports of that vehicle."
"We also did area inquiries to see if we could locate the vehicle, but didn't have any luck, so now we're just trying to find out more information.
The incident could have been relatively innocent, but the police wanted to find out more about what went on, she said.
"It could have been people just mucking around rather than something more sinister, but we just don't know," Kennett said.
"Even if the people in the car came forward and told us what happened, that would help clear it up."
Police want anyone who may have seen the car or who has information about the incident to contact Whangarei police on 09 430 4500 or to Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
