Police have charged three men in connection with the death of a 19-year-old after a fight in Taupo this morning.
Wiremu Birch died on the way to hospital in the early hours of the morning.
The trio have all been charged with grievous bodily harm and will appear in Rotorua District Court tomorrow morning, police said.
Taupo police launched a homicide investigation after the incident on the corner of Rifle Range Rd and Hinekura Ave at about 3.15am. Birch was thought to have been stabbed.
Police say the investigation is still ongoing and further arrests may still be made in relation to Birch’s death.
They are asking members of the public in the area of Rifle Range Rd, Hinekura Ave or Hinemoa Ave who saw or heard anything suspicious between 2.30am and 3.30am today to contact them.
The circumstances surrounding the death, including how many people were involved and whether the dead man knew his attacker were yet to be established, police said.
''We are confident at this stage that it is an isolated incident and I want to provide assurances that there is no public safety risk to the wider community," Taupo Area Commander Inspector Steve Bullock said.
