A non-existent trip to New York was the basis for a scam by a young man in Napier.

Police are warning Napier people about a "good looking" teenager going door to door collecting money for a non-existent school trip.

Police and St John's College have become aware of the youth, believed to be aged 16 or 17, going door-to-door in Napier asking for money for a school trip to New York.

He appears to be targeting the elderly.

Police say he has been described as a dark haired "good looking" Caucasian.

He is not wearing a school uniform, but claims to be a student at St John's College. He takes details from people he speaks to by noting them down in an exercise book.

Police ask that anyone who is approached by this male contact themĀ on 06 831 0700.
