A man is in police custody after his violent threats prompted a response from armed police and a specialist negotiation team.

Constable Craig O'Doherty said police were called to a Glenpark Ave address in New Plymouth about 12.45pm  on Friday after the man assaulted a woman at the property.

As officers arrived, O'Doherty said the man barricaded himself inside the house and threatened to burn it down.  He also made threats to hurt anyone who tried to come onto the property.

The armed offenders squad and a police negotiation team were sent to the address in response and a section of Glenpark Ave was cordoned off.

However, the man gave himself up shortly afterwards and was taken into custody without further incident, O'Doherty said.

The man appeared in the New Plymouth District Court on Saturday and was remanded into the care of the mental health unit at Te Puna Waiora to reappear on Wednesday.
