Police have arrested a man for allegedly assaulting a Tauranga security guard who died hours later - but say it appears the assault didn't cause the death.

The 32-year-old suspect will appear in Tauranga District Court later today on charges with assault and participating in an organised criminal group.

But police say pathology results indicate that Lance Michael Scullin's death wasn't directly caused the assault. Scullin was found dead in his Merivale home Sunday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Turner said: "There has clearly been an assault  and hours later Mr Scullin has died but the injury does not appear to have caused  his death. Our investigation is continuing but at this stage we do not anticipate more serious charges."
