A man who escaped from the Dunedin police cells yesterday is back behind bars, after being found at a Dunedin address last night.

Police hunted for Tolu Maanaiama late yesterday afternoon after the 27 year-old, whom police said was potentially dangerous, escaped from the cells at Dunedin central police station.

Police southern deployment co-ordinator Steve Aitken said Maanaiama was found about 8.30pm and arrested "without incident".

He will appear in the Dunedin District Court today.

Inspector Greg Sparrow of the Dunedin police said last night an investigation into how Maanaiama escaped custody was underway.
