Two other men then got out of the van and tried to calm the offender down.

Punches were thrown, but the passenger was not struck, the spokeswoman said.

Both vehicles drove off in the same direction after the incident, and police were seen talking to both parties further down Kent Terrace, near the intersection with Elizabeth St, shortly after 8am

The incident happened shortly before 8am.

It was unclear what led to the dispute.

Bus passenger Chrissy Bell said she witnessed the incident and was "really shaken".

The bus she was on was travelling down Oriental Parade waiting to turn right onto Courtenay Place when the incident occurred.

"I saw a van pull up and three men got out. I thought they must be swapping drivers or something like that, but I thought that was a daft place to stop - at the lights.

"Then they all walked towards the car in front of them in the left lane.

"They looked very angry. Then one of the guys, who had a high visibility vest on, started punching the passenger window. He smashed it to smithereens."

The passenger was "cowering" and trying to get away from the window, Bell said.

Everybody on the bus started to take notice and some took photographs of the incident.

The vehicle drove off when the lights turned green but the offender continued to punch as the vehicle drove off, she said.

"I was really shocked. I've never seen anybody so aggressive in my life."
