A man sought in relation to the attempted abduction of a 13-year-old Timaru girl at Washdyke has been arrested.

The search for Blaine Ross Hughes, 20, followed the attempted abduction of the girl as she cycled along State Highway 8 near Sir Basil Arthur Park 8pm on Tuesday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Marion Neill said a man allegedly grabbed the girl off her bicycle and dragged her across a fence into a bush area. A witness from a nearby address went to the girl's aid and the alleged offender ran off.

Hughes was located and arrested without incident in Timaru just after 6am this morning after information was received from a member of the public.

He was in an Isuzu Bighorn vehicle which had been reported stolen earlier in the week.

He appeared in the Timaru District Court this morning on charges of unlawful taking and injuring with intent to injure, and was remanded in custody to 19 December.

Neill said further charges were likely.

"Police are grateful for the assistance of the public in helping us to locate this man."
