A man charged with murder after a fatal shooting in the Bay of Plenty has denied the charge.

Tyrone Daniel Flavell, 19, entered a not guilty plea through his lawyer before Justice Paul Heath in the High Court in Tauranga today. His attendance in court was excused, SunLive reported.

Maketu man Isaac Dale Bushell, 46, was found dead in a park at the beachside town, 40 kilometres southeast of Tauranga, about 1.45am on Sunday, December 8. His body had a bullet wound in it.

The victim and accused were known to each other and had been at the same Maketu gathering on the Saturday evening, police said.
