The sound of a gun being fired in a Hutt Valley suburb was most likely banging from a fight between two men, police have said.

Armed police were called to Epuni after a man was spotted with a gun and there were reports of shots being fired in a shopping centre at 2.15pm today, Senior Sergeant Marc Clausen said.

It was thought to be a man firing at another man, but a CIB examination this afternoon found no evidence of an actual shot being fired.

It appeared one of the men involved in the argument had an air pistol but it was not drawn or fired, police communications said this evening.

Police also said they had found the victim but he was not making any complaint.

The man with the air pistol took off in a car, which was found abandoned on Military Rd, Boulcott, near the Hutt Golf Club.

Oxford Tce and Military Rd were cordoned off but the cordons had since been lifted.

Len Hooper Pharmacy technician Lisa Duncan said the man, who it appeared was being shot at, had taken refuge in the dairy next door. Staff had been concerned and came and got her.

Mrs Duncan went next door to talk to the ‘‘freaked out’’ man who was hiding out.

‘‘He just looked like a normal everyday Joe.’’

The man did not appear to be injured. He did not want police to be called and ‘‘just sort of snuck away’’.

‘‘He said he was being chased and he was hiding.’’
