Hamilton police are searching for a person who shot at two people with an air rifle last night.

The two incidents occurred in the Claudelands area around 7pm and 7.45pm, police said.

A woman on River Road was narrowly missed from being hit in the face and a man outside Pizza Hut was shot in the back.

The injured man required medical treatment as the pellet penetrated two layers of clothing.

The only clue police had so far was that a white four-door sedan might be involved.

"It is unfortunate such behaviour occurred on an evening when people should be celebrating Christmas," senior sergeant Pete van de Wetering said.

Anyone with information could phone the Hamilton Central Police station on (07) 8586200 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
