A large-scale police chase of a stolen vehicle took place in Rotorua and the Eastern Bay of Plenty this morning.

A 27-year-old Rotorua man was arrested following the event, police said.

The Baytrust Rescue Helicopter was used to follow the vehicle after a road pursuit was abandoned due to the dangerous nature of the driving, police said.

The driver went from Rotorua, towards Paengaroa, then into Whakatane before heading through Edgecumbe and back towards Rotorua.

He ran over road spikes at Lake Rotoma on State Highway 20.

The helicopter then saw him attempting to hide down a driveway.

Police caught the man as he attempted to turn the car back onto the highway and rolled.
