A person driving a stolen truck has rammed a police car before escaping by driving the wrong way along an Auckland motorway.

Police said they were told about 12.30am today of a person stealing a light truck from a West Auckland car yard.

A police patrol car spotted the truck and tried to stop it but the truck rammed the car, disabling it.

Other police patrols pursued the truck until it drove onto the Northwestern Motorway and travelled west from Te Atatu Road in the eastbound lanes.

The pursuit was abandoned due to the risk to the public.

The truck was seen leaving the motorway at Lincoln Road, and was found abandoned in an industrial area shortly afterwards.

Despite an extensive search of the area the driver has not been located and enquiries are continuing.

No one was hurt when the police car was rammed, but the car was badly damaged.
