Detectives are investigating a Boxing Day sexual assault in Lower Hutt.

The assault happened in an alleyway next to Delaney Park in Stokes Valley about 7pm yesterday, police said.

A woman was walking through the park and noticed a man near the cricket club.

He followed her from park through the alleyway, which connects to Chittick St.

He sexually assaulted her in the alleyway before running back towards the park.

The woman was left ''distressed and shaken'', police said. The attacker was described as about 1.75 metres tall, with a muscular build.

He was in his late teens or early 20s.
