A man is in serious condition tonight after being shot in the chest at a house in Waitemata.

Police have taken a 39-year-old woman into custody.

A 19-year-old woman, believed to be the daughter of the man and woman, was also at the house and was unharmed.

Police recovered a .22 rifle from the house.
