Police chasing an alleged petrol thief were pelted with bottles in Hamilton tonight.

Police say the woman had dumped her car and was fleeing on foot.

"After a short pursuit the woman drove into Sefton Crescent, Chartwell where she dumped the car and ran off,'' a police spokesperson said.

''As the police patrol car entered Sefton Crescent it was pelted with bottles by other people in the street.''

The police officer was not injured but the police car's windows were smashed.

Police are searching houses in the area for the woman driver, whose identity is known.
