A teen accused of shooting two people with an air rifle outside a Hamilton Pizza Hut has appeared in court.

Shawn Michael Hawkins, 18, appeared before Community Magistrate Susan Hovell at Hamilton District Court yesterday, where he faced two charges of careless use of a firearm causing death or injury and one charge of possessing cannabis.

Hawkins is alleged to have shot two men with an air rifle outside the Claudelands Pizza Hut franchise on December 24 and again on Christmas Day.

In the first incident, a 31-year-old Hamilton man was shot once in the lower back outside the Grey St store about 7pm, police said.

A day later, a man was shot in the buttocks as he was talking to a friend outside the same store at about 7.45pm.

Hovell remanded Hawkins on bail and ordered him not to possess or use any firearms, including an air rifle.
