An elderly woman was tied up during an aggravated robbery at her South Auckland home.

A man wearing a balaclava and holding a knife entered the Papatoetoe home about 1pm yesterday as the woman opened her back door to collect her washing.

The woman was alone at the time.

The house was ransacked for jewellery and cash while the woman was tied up with a scarf and a bed sheet.

"We are appalled at the violent nature of this crime during broad daylight," Detective Sergeant Simon Beal said.

"Any information from members of the public regarding this incident will be vital to the investigation."

Police are asking for members of the public to report any suspicious sightings in the areas of Huia Rd, Stonex Rd, Bernard St and Kimpton Rd between noon and 4pm yesterday.

Anyone with information is urged to call Beal on 09 261 1321 or to contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
