Police have released a composite image of a man who sexually assaulted a woman on Boxing Day.

The attack occurred at around 7pm, as a woman walked through an alleyway next to Delaney Park in Stokes Valley.

A man followed the woman through the alleyway to Chittick Street, where she was sexually assaulted.He was described as being in his late teens or early 20s, approximately 175cm tall with a muscular build.

"People may remember the distinctive t-shirt the male was wearing which is described as being black with two purple and two yellow squares on the front of it and with white writing below the squares," Detective Constable Mark Sutton said.

"We are encouraging anyone who has any information about the identity of this male or who was in the area at the time and may have seen anything suspicious to contact Hutt Valley Police."
