A man has been arrested after he was seen shooting a firearm on a beach in West Auckland.

Police were called to the scene at a Cornwallis beach about 1.45pm after calls from the public.

Inspector Lou Alofa said the man was arrested at the beach and his air rifle confiscated.

"A man was seen shooting at rocks and targets on a Cornwallis beach. The area he was in was a public area," he said.

Alofa added that police are still considering which charges the man will face.
