A Featherston man with past convictions for trying to blow up two police officers has pleaded guilty to possessing explosives and methamphetamine.

George Robert Murray, 48, has convictions from 1996 for the attempted murder of Waihi police constables Warrick Harris and Karen Buchanan. A jury found him guilty and he was sentenced to 12 years' jail.

Yesterday he pleaded guilty to carrying theatrical squibs and triggers that could be used to make improvised explosive devices in his car on December 2 last year on the Old Hutt Road.

Murray's car was stopped by police for an unrelated matter. Police found methamphetamine in a plastic bag in the driver's seat.

A search of the car also found fireworks, 24 squibs called bullet hits, electronic surveillance gear, railway detonators, wireless door bells, and sensors that could be used as detonators.

Murray told police they were toys, not explosives.

In 1994 Murray had rigged a car with a home-made incendiary device wired to a door and a drum containing volatile fuel on the back seat abandoned in the Karangahake Gorge between Waihi and Paeroa.

He admitted making it but had said it was for an insurance job on the car.

Hutt Valley District Court Judge John Bergseng yesterday remanded Murray in custody until March for sentence.
