A man has died after an explosion at a suspected methamphetamine lab in Northland last night.

The 49-year-old man died about 12.20pm as a result of injuries received in the explosion at an Opouteke Rd, Pakotai, address.

Another man, aged 26, has been transferred to Middlemore Hospital for specialist treatment and is in a stable condition.

Specialist police staff, ESR and fire safety investigators are on the scene to determine the exact cause of the explosion.
