A Dunedin woman was dragged by a car in a central-city car park after she refused to let go of her handbag, allegedly snatched by the vehicle's occupants.

Milton woman, Christine Daphne McLaren, 21, was charged with robbery of the handbag and contents, and remanded on bail without plea in the Dunedin District Court today.

Charges to relate to the victim, whose injuries are at this stage unknown, have not yet been laid.

Dunedin police said the car park incident occurred at 5.30pm yesterday in the Countdown car park.

McLaren, who was an occupant of a Honda Accord car, allegedly tried to steal the handbag from the victim who was loading groceries into her car.

"Without stopping their car, the offenders have tried to grab the bag, but to prevent the theft, the woman has held on to her bag and subsequently been dragged along the ground by the vehicle," Sergeant Nathan White said.

"After she let it go, the vehicle has then driven off."

Police caught up with McLaren and arrested her just after 7pm.

Today she also faced a joint charge, with Grant Robert Butler, 23, of Dunedin, of theft from a motor vehicle.
