A 20-year-old man who kidnapped a 6-year-old girl and indecently assaulted her has admitted his offending this morning.

West Auckland resident Tim Horne, who is deaf and followed proceedings with the help of a sign-language interpreter, also lost his battle for name suppression in the Waitakere District Court.

His father – a schoolteacher – provided an affidavit in support of his son's name being kept secret, but Judge Heemi Taumaunu said the consequences to him and Horne's siblings did not meet the threshold of "extreme hardship".

At 8pm on New Year's Day, the victim and two friends were playing in Glendene Ave when Horne emerged from the bushes.

He started dancing with the girls and offered them chewing gum, which they accepted.

As the group were walking away Horne pounced, snatching the victim and running down a dirt track into Glendene Reserve.

With the victim in his arms, he climbed into the creek bed where he removed her clothes and inappropriately touched her.

"She screamed and he yelled out 'I'm sorry, I'm sorry'," Judge Taumaunu said.

Horne tried to stifle her screams by putting his hands over her mouth, but her mother had heard her and dashed through the bush to her aid.

The offender ran off, leaving the girl "distressed" with scratches and bruises on her legs and arms.

Horne was remanded in custody until May when he will be sentenced.
