A young Auckland Nines fan remains in a critical condition with family at his side following a serious assault last night.

Police say the 23-year-old man and his brother left the NRL tournament at Eden Park to head to a party in nearby Bellwood Ave, shortly before the incident occurred.

An ambulance was called at 8.15. Police arrived shortly afterwards.

The man was taken to Auckland Hospital in a critical condition while police cordoned the property.

Auckland city CIB Detective Inspector Chris Cahill said scene examination was nearly completed this afternoon.

"Staff have spoken to residents and party-goers and are trying to get to the bottom of what took place and who is responsible for the young man's head injuries," Cahill said.

"We are liaising with hospital staff and supporting the man's family at this difficult time."
